S4 Ep9: If They Move... Talking Peckinpah with Craig Terlson
Author, film connoisseur, and all around great guy, Craig Terlson is back on Geek4, and this time we’re talking about the films of Sam Peckinpah: Western revisionist, “tortured genius,” and the director critics called “Bloody Sam.”
We get into why (most of ) Peckinpah’s films still matter. He took the Western away from the John Wayne hero and gave it aging outlaws whose time has passed them by. He brought back the same actors and crew, and he fought the studios endlessly over cuts that butchered his films. Along the way we cover Bob Dylan and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” (which debuted in a Peckinpah film), a dead sparrow, a Peckinpah bulletin board from the early internet. We take a detour into Kurosawa’s Sanjuro, offer some hot takes on Unforgiven and Convoy, and Craig gives us a recommended viewing order for newcomers.
Craig also has some news: the novel he’s working on now turns out to have Peckinpah all over it.
Craig is the author of the Luke Fischer crime series and Samurai Bluegrass, which you can find HERE or wherever fine books are sold. You can find more of his writing on his Substack.
