My guest on this episode is John Dorney. John is a UK based actor, award-winning playwright as well as a podcaster. He cohosts Best Pick Podcast with Jessica Regan and Tom Salinsky, both former guests of Geek 4. John is also a huge Doctor Who fan. Like many British children, John grew up watching the Doctor's adventures from the safety of behind the couch. Later, after drama school and having some success with a play, John transitioned his love of Doctor Who into a career, writing for the Doctor Who audio dramas produced by Big Finish productions. In fact, John might be the most prolific writer of Doctor Who - the calculations are a little muddy, as we discuss, but he's penned almost a hundred scripts and stories for Big Finish.

Episode 214: The Return of FRANKIE!!!

n this episode, I’m thrilled to be joined by the return of Frankie Pellat. You may recall that Frankie cohosts two excellent podcasts: Read and Buried, a crime novel podcast, and the recently launched Labours of Hercule (along with Geek4 alum Adam Roche).

The last time she was here, we talked about Frankie's love for David Suchet's character defining portrayal. This time we're talking about Frankie's love of true crime. From reading true crime as a young kid, to podcasts and books. This was such a fun conversation and it went in a dozen different directions: death rituals, serial killers, graveyards, haunted houses, Charles Mason, Frankie's knife collection, and bad Canadian rap. Frankie is a blast. Just a slight warning: we do get a little dark in this episode. If you're offended by macabre humour, be forewarned.

Episode 213: IT'S SHOW TIME with Larry WIlson

On this episode, I'm joined by  Larry Wilson. Larry's a working screenwriter whose movies include Beetlejuice, (1988) The Addams Family (1991), and The Little Vampire  (2000) and whose current screenplay, Loose Spooks. is about to be unleashed on the marketplace. Larry also wrote and directed for HBO's Tales From The Crypt for six seasons and had the honor of a colorized Alfred Hitchcock introducing his first produced credit. "The Jar", directed by Tim Burton. Along with his writing career, Larry's taught screenwriting for over 30 years and has just started The Wilson Workshop, where he'll be offering classes, consultations and for the first time ever, a year-long mentoring program where Larry will guide aspiring screen writers thRough the process of completing their script with consultations, notes, and weekly check-ins. 

In this episode, we discuss Larry's deep love of movies - everything from the Universal horror classic, The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and the seminal Marx Brothers comedy Duck Soup (1933) to Tsui Hark's romantic horror comedy, Chinese Ghost Story (1987), which Larry paid tribute to in The Addams Family. Larry has lots of stories about his early years in Hollywood as well as working with international filmmakers like Hark and Takakura Ken. He even confirms a long standing rumour about the premise of a Beetlejuice sequel. Larry's love of movies is infectious.

Episode 211: Howling at the Moon with Sally-Anne Bedford

My guest on episode 211 is Sally-Anne Bedford. Sally-Anne is an author with a long standing love of Hammer horror films and the darker stories we share. Her bimonthly Substack newletter, Into the Shadows, is a welcome addtion to my inbox. Sally-Anne's first novel, The Cure, is a dark thriller set in an ex-asylum , the very sort Sally-Anne onceworked in herself, will be released in Fall 2022 from Joffe Books.

Sally-Anne is also a massive fan of John Landis's 1981 comic-horror masterpiece, An American Werewolf in London. At a recent online gathering we both attended, she spoke about the film with such enthusiasm, I KNEW I had to have her on the podcast.

This was such a fun conversation and. Sally-Anne’s story about a trip to Blockbuster with her father is worth a download alone. We cover a bunch of topics connected to An American Werewolf in London: Sally-Anne’s childhood film tastes, the disappointing sequel, her visitng shooting locations in Wales, and her desire to own a lifesized werewolf.

My guest today is the returning Adam Roche. Adam is a Geek4 alum (Episode 207) and was once again so generous with his time. Last time we talked about Adam's love of old time radio. This time we're talking about his passion for the Basil Rathbone Nigel Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes movies, which were made between 1939 and 1946. Rathbone and Bruce also starred in over 220 episodes as Holmes and Watson on the radio in The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Adam's love of the Rathbone and Bruce pairing actually promoted him to start what became The Secret History of Hollywood Podcast, researching and writing a two hour podcast episode dedicated to the Rathbone/Bruce pairing. We talk about the origins of the pairing, as well as the studio shift to Universal and the decision to have Holmes exist in contemporary stories, not unlike Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat’s acclaimed updating, Sherlock. We also make fun of Rathbone’s “modern” hair style

Adam is one of the kindest and most generous people I've met in podcasting. When he heard that I was moving, he messaged me to check in and say that if he was closer, he'd happily drive the moving truck and spring for take out.

I'm not really sure how many of you care about how the proverbial sausage gets made around here, but so many things went wrong with this episode. The aforementioned move - and all personal things that went on around that move - certainly made giving the mental commitments to the podcast- contacting people, booking them, preparing for the interviews, editing - especially challenging.

Then there were the technical difficulties. When transferring files to my new computer, I lost all the audio drop-ins I use or have been collecting -  the theme, the closing as well as the audio transfers of various interviews I've been saving for the next Twin Peaks podcast (which is delaying that project even more). Also, when Zoom re-installed on my computer, all the settings reverted to their original state - so, Zoom did NOT record my and Adam's audio track separately. Adam, always a professional, recorded and sent his audio to me, which helped, but without a clean track of my part of the conversation, I wasn't able to edit out the times we talk over each other, or remove as many of my Ummms and annoying repetition. Still, it's not as bad as NOT recording at all. It just made editing a bit more challenging.

Still. this was a fun conversation, and Adam is delightful as always. So I hope you enjoy it.

I look at what was going on in popular culture - music, movies and television; trace the partnership between David Lynch, the then two-time Academy Award nominated director, and Mark Frost, successful TV writer and producer. .
